Blogging from iPhone

July 22nd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in blogging, iphone, personal

Well with the recent release of wodpress for the iPhone from the app store I might actually blog more. This could be a good thing or a bad thing. I will try to keep the posts inline with my past postings but I will not guarentee anything.

First post from my iPhone.

Devonthink Pro Office to EagleFiler

June 5th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in gtd, personal, software

Back in early May of this year a good friend of mine switched from DEVONtechnologies DEVONthink Professional Office to C-Command’s EagleFiler for organizing his digital data.

A couple of weeks ago I took the plunge as well due to the fact that I needed to take a lot of data and dump into something I could tag and organize and Devonthink was unable to accomplish without a lot of extra hassle that was not required by Eaglefiler. Do not get me wrong it has been a few weeks since I had made my switch and I am wishing that Eaglefiler was able to Index my documents to allow me to look for a specific phrase contained within them. It might be there but I have not had the time lately to dig deeper into it.

If you have not tried either one of these please run through the demo period and see how they work out. I will try and keep this post updated with new updates as I learn new things.

Chimay and Pork Tenderloin

June 5th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in personal

A short while back there was a one hour episode on TV about beer and fine meals and how a good beer can go together with a fine meal just as good if not better than wine has historically been. Do not get me wrong I usually do not view food type channels but this one was being hosted by the Chairman & CEO of Stone Brewery located in San Marcos, CA.

The show traveled all across the United States. The one that caught my eye was were the chef explained that Chimay Blue goes really well with a Pork Tenderloin and the Chimay Red goes perfectly with Venison. When they visited one of the many steak houses in Houston TX the owner recommended to have Samuel Adams Boston Lager with a Ribeye steak. (That steak house is on my do not visit list now). There is a pub in the Los Angeles, CA area that makes and outstanding Hamburger and it was paired with Stone Brewery’s Arrogant Bastard.

If I ever find a link to the references to the show I will be sure to update this post with that information.

Been Kinda Busy

May 3rd, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Uncategorized

Well, I have not posted anything in a while due to personal and work life being really busy. I have been so busy that one of my friends on twitter checked up on me since I had not posted a twit in a while even though I have a twitter client (Twinkle) installed on my iPhone.

I am going to try and make an effort to try and post something a little more frequently that I have in the past.

Reasons to get your parents and family members to use OSX

April 8th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in computers, osx, personal

The below snippit is from a site that I have in my RSS feeds called TUAW and I could not resist in posting it since I have been caught in this position many times with parents, family members, and friends of the family. If you enjoy the snippit please visit TUAW to read the complete article. (Let me know how close you come to this situation)

I held the phone tightly in my right hand. With my left, I rubbed my dry, tired eyes. I looked at the clock in my Mac’s menu bar. I had been on the phone for forty-five minutes, with no indication that I’d be hanging it up any time soon.

“OK,” I said in a slow, deliberate tone. “Let’s start from the beginning. Click on the Mail menu. A list should appear. Do you see it?”

A pause. “Yes,” my mother said.

“What do you see in that list?” I said.

“File … About Mail … Preferences ….”

“Good. Do you see ‘Quit’?”

“Yes.”

“Excellent. Click on ‘Quit’ and we’ll start again.”

Did you change the default password on your router?

April 8th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in hacking, security

For the last 4-5 years I have seen Dan Kaminsky’s talks at either Blackhat, Defcon, or Toorcon. Dan has the knack for giving a talk with technical knowledge and making it enjoyable to attend. In other words it is never boring and he does not deliver it in a monotone fashion. With that said and you are attending RSA Security \Conference in San Francisco, CA please mark this talk as one to attend.

Like having control of your connection to the internet? Don’t tell Dan Kaminsky that — the researcher has developed a method of DNS attack utilizing typical D-Link or Linksys routers that can allow hackers to gain command of your gear. The winner-takes-all maneuver, which is called a “DNS rebinding attack,” functions by putting JavaScript into play that fools your browser into altering your router’s configuration, thus letting the operator remotely administer the device. The concept isn’t water-tight, as it takes advantage of easily-guessable router admin passwords, though Kaminsky says the enabling bug exists as a “core issue” for browsers. The attack will be showcased at tomorrow’s RSA security conference, where it’s hoped the demonstration will raise awareness about router security vulnerability. In the meantime, we suggest you change that default password.

Jawbone has arrived

April 6th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in personal

Well, my black Jawbone has arrived. From my research it should be a perfect match for my iPhone that I mentioned that I received for my birthday. The iPhone performance and it usefulness have been just exhilarating. I am really enjoying having the “Internet in my pocket”. Wife enjoys that I am not always in front of my laptop and giggles when I steal a few short moments looking at RSS feeds or e-mail from my iPhone. I look forward to when I get to use it on my home network when version 2.0 of the firmware is released.

Textdrive to Joyent Accelerators

March 20th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in blogging, news, server

This domain has been hosted at Textdrive for a few years now. When I signed up my site as placed on a shared hosting server (it fit my needs) running FreeBSD. Textdrive/Joyent has just finished migration of my domain to the new Shared Accelerators that are running Solaris. If something is not working on the site please drop me a line or a comment letting me know so I can look into it deeper. The guys/gals over at Joyent did a top notch job on the transition of my account.

A couple of really nice things that happened with the migration is a more central management interface for managing my hosting account. The new system has pre-configured (for this server) installers of the common web applications (blogging software, content management systems, photo galleries, etc) ready to go at a click of a radial button. With my transition of subversion to git, Joyent must have been watching the net because they added git support for both public and private access.

If you are shopping for a hosting provider take a look to see what Joyent has to offer. There current pricing can be found here. If you have any questions concerning my experience in using Joyent please leave a comment.

Omni Groups OmniGraffle Pro Upgrade Price Insanity ($74.95)

March 5th, 2008 | 3 Comments | Posted in mac software, personal

I have been a long time user of Omni Groups OmniGraffle Pro (version 2.x) and have been keeping up to date by procuring new license updates as needed to get me to version 4.0 pro version. Now that the pro version has been released and I have looked at the price for an upgrade ($74.95) I think this will be the time that I part ways with Omni and the OmniGraffle Pro (and non pro) product.

I feel this pricing is a big mistake on their part with the majority of the OS X user base that would purchase this product probably owned a license copy of a recent visio product due to the lack of support from any native OS X application. You couple this new price and looking and what each user has paid for either VMWare Fusion or Parallels (79.99) to bridge this gap will make it hard to justify the extreme upgrade cost to upgrade from one version behind. I think $75 is a little bit steep for me not to want to start my virtualized windows xp system to look at a visio document

Also being a licensed user of current versions of OmniOutliner Pro, OmniWeb, and OmniFocus as well I will start having to think twice before upgrading my license for any of these other products that Omni produces.

If this is going to be a growing trend for Omni Group I will be keeping an eye out for software to replace the duties that these software titles currently fulfill.
